For our session, you will need to enable the Data Analysis ToolPak in Microsoft Excel. This add-in is built into Excel but is not enabled by default.

Please follow the steps below carefully. Instructions vary slightly depending on your operating system and Excel version.

Step 1: Open Microsoft Excel

  1. Open Microsoft Excel on your computer.

  2. You may open a blank workbook — no specific file is required.

Step 2: Enable the ToolPak on Windows

(Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, Microsoft 365)

  1. Click File (top-left corner).

  2. Click Options at the bottom of the menu.

  3. In the Excel Options window, click Add-ins (left panel).

  4. At the bottom of the window:

    • Find Manage:

    • Ensure it says Excel Add-ins

  5. Click Go…

  6. In the Add-ins dialog box:

    • Check the box next to Analysis ToolPak

  7. Click OK

  8. If prompted to install the add-in, click Yes and wait for it to complete.

Step 3: Enable the ToolPak on macOS

(Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, Microsoft 365)

  1. With Excel open, look at the top menu bar.

  2. Click Tools

  3. Select Excel Add-ins

  4. In the Add-ins window:

    • Check the box next to Analysis ToolPak

  5. Click OK

  6. If prompted, allow Excel to install the add-in.

Note for Mac users:
If you do not see Excel Add-ins under the Tools menu, please ensure your Excel application is fully updated.

Step 4: Confirm the ToolPak Is Enabled (Required)

  1. Click the Data tab in Excel.

  2. Look to the far right side of the toolbar.

  3. You should see a button labeled Data Analysis.

  • ✅ If you see Data Analysis, setup is complete.

  • ❌ If you do not see it, repeat the steps above carefully.

Step 5: Troubleshooting Tips

If the Data Analysis button does not appear:

  • Close Excel completely and reopen it.

  • Re-check that Analysis ToolPak is selected (not unchecked).

  • Make sure Excel is not in a limited or viewer-only mode.

  • If you are using a work or school computer, software restrictions may apply. Contact your IT support if needed.
